Winter Wonderland

We have already been enjoying some snowfall. It is hard to believe that Christmas is almost here. It is a challenge finding a balance with Lucas between Jesus and presents. He is working on memorizing John 3:16 and is ever excited to open the Advent calendar door and receive a small gift. Everyday he excitedly asks "when can we talk about Baby Jesus and Lucas get a present!" Oh, the childlike wonder! :)

Timothy Orlando was born on January 16th, 2011. He has been an HUGE joy in our home. Lucas has adapted well to having a new little brother. Besides transitioning into being parents of two, we are also in the process of a move. We will be leaving CFCI in Costa Rica and heading to Indiana. We are not sure all the Lord has in store for us. We are praying and asking him to direct our path. It is going to be very hard to say goodbye to family and friends here after 10 years of service for Kellie and a lifetime for Orlando. But, we are also looking forward to reconnecting with everyone in the States. Please pray for us during this time of change. Lucas & Timothy

Easter Egg Hunt April 2010

Lucas enjoyed his first easter egg hunt! It wasn't very "traditional" in the U.S. sense, as we didn't do it until after dark! It was a busy day with church and family. Our church has the tradition to dress in white, so Lucas was all decked out in his Easter attire. He had to open each egg as he found it, so it was quite a process! :)

Orlando's Oath Ceremony

Orlando was sworn in as a U.S. citizen on November 7, 2008. We praise God for this incredible blessing! It will make traveling between our countries much easier and all of our family will legally be able to be in the U.S. if God would bring us back here to live in the future.

A Blessing from the Lord

Lucas is growing and changing everyday! He is such an incredible joy in our lives. He has changed the way we look at the world and value life. We are reminded constantly of the verses we prayed as we patiently waited for Lucas in Psalms 127, "sons are a blessing from the Lord."

We are beginning to wrap up our time here in the United States, as we will be departing on December 10th. We have many more travels in the next couple of months. We are speaking in churches and sharing with families and individuals the great mission God has laid upon our hearts. It will be so hard to say goodbye to loved ones here, but we know that an incredible work awaits us in Costa Rica. We are excited to begin our new life together with Lucas there.

Please pray for us as we begin to transition our mindset back to Costa Rica. We can see God's hand at work in each step that we take. Pray for us to keep our eyes on Christ.

My First Few Hours

Lucas Samuel was born on August 4, 2008 at 7:49am, weighing in at 7lbs. 14 oz. and 20 inches long.

Lucas is an answer to so many prayers and we thank God for his faithfulness through this whole process. We want to share with you the special meaning of his name.

Lucas: Bringer of light Samuel: God hears

We pray that he will truly be a bringer of light to this dark world and God definitely heard our prayers! Thank you for celebrating with us!

We also want to share with you the incredible testimony of God's blessing in Lucas' conception. If you haven't heard our testimony before. Please read on! :)

***Orlando and I had been patiently waiting on the Lord for about 2 years, hoping that at some point we would have the awesome privilege of being parents. During a class that I was taking last semester at ESEPA, one of my classmates shared on October 4^th about how he and his wife had had a difficult time getting pregnant with their second child. He talked of how after much waiting and trying many different "methods" to get pregnant, they felt the Lord telling them to just pray and wait on the Lord. Orlando and I had not done anything medically to try and get pregnant. We have just been doing "the normal." J However, I felt a strong nudging from the Lord that I needed to be more intentional about my praying and really seek the Lord and this blessing that he wanted to fulfill in us. That night I wrote out Psalms 127 & 128 in my journal along with a short prayer expressing my desire to fully trust in the Lord in this miracle and that I would give him complete glory knowing that he was the one who could open my womb.

The Lord has a great sense of humor and He never leaves us alone in our time of seeking. Two days later we attended a prayer and fasting time at our church with a few other leaders that we know well. The focus of the prayer time was praying for our children. All of the other individuals and couples had children of teenage years or older, so I just thought to myself, "Lord, is this from you?" During one of the dynamics we were to write down the names of our children and commit to praying for them daily. One of the ladies suggested that we write down names of children we would like to have. I did so, and once again we prayed, asking the Lord to fulfill this petition. That day many people realized our desire to have children and began praying with us.

Almost every Sunday someone would say at church, "Oh, I just know that you will return from the States with a baby!" Part of me was ecstatic at the thought and another part of me felt like a doubting Thomas or a laughing Sara. But, we continued to trust in the Lord and wait.

It may not always seem that the Lord is quick in answering or as tangible as this miracle was but within two to three weeks of having begun praying, I became pregnant! Now, this may sound like a simple process but we didn't know that we were pregnant until December 5^th. I did three home pregnancy tests but they all came out negative. I began to think that there might be something else wrong. However, after the advice from a friend at church, I went to have a blood test done. As I walked out of the clinic, results in hand, I opened the paper for the first time seeing the words "POSITIVA" on the page and began crying on the streets of Alajuela. It seemed so surreal and almost too good to be true. Orlando was with me sharing in the excitement and within the hour we had shared the news with my in-laws and brothers-in-law who were thrilled. We decided to wait until Christmas Eve to share it with my family in person. Again, it was a joyous occasion for all!

Alive and Kicking!

It has been an awfully long time since I've blogged. I've tried to keep everyone updated through letters and emails, but blogging seems to have fallen by the wayside through our time in the States and pregnancy. I am only 3 days away from my due date! This really has been such a wonderful pregnancy. I've had very few aches and pains and have stayed active and healthy. I pray (and ask that you do along with me) that the labor and delivery go just as smoothly. We eagerly await the arrival of this special little one that God has blessed us with!

We are still diligently working on our financial support raising efforts. We trust that God has great plans for us upon our return to Costa Rica and need many new people to assist us in our ministry through their giving. We really do see each supporter as a part of our ministry. Many people love missions but are unable to go. Others go but still like to support. By being a part of our financial ministry team, you are a part of reaching others for Christ. We cannot do the work we do without you. So, please pray about how you might be able to be involved in missions through giving. We would love to have you on board!

Besides raising support, we are also having a wonderful time visiting with family and friends. It has been 5 1/2 years since we've spent a significant amount of time in the States (4 months). The time we've had to renew relationships and love on those who pour out so much love on us has been incredible. My immediate family has been an amazing support through this pregnancy, and I know will be taking on even more in the few months we still have here.

Please continue to pray for us, especially in the following ways:
* Pray for a smooth and safe delivery for our baby (and me!)
* Pray for my family as they are making many adjustments to having us here, the new baby and all of my four grandparents living with them.
* Pray for our support raising efforts, that God would touch the hearts of those who are to be a part of our financial ministry team.
* Pray for our ministry in Costa Rica, as we begin to prepare for what is waiting for us upon our return.

3 Weeks Until Take Off

Hello friends and family! As most of you know, Orlando and I have plans to head north for a year furlough. We are trying to wrap things up on this end, so that we will be ready for our departure on December 18th. We are really excited about what the next year holds for us! We will be staying with my parents in IN for most of the year, with plans to do lots of traveling to catch up with as many of you as possible. Orlando will be concentrating on learning English and we will both be working hard to raise our support base so as to continue in our work with CFCI in Costa Rica. We would love to talk to and see as many of you as possible. Please contact us if we haven't contacted you, so we can begin to make plans for next year! Darwin is Orlando's best friend. He has been an important part of our lives throughout the last few years. Darwin recently graduated from ESEPA where Orlando is studying and is now working on his master's. He is also a missionary with CFCI. As part of his master's program he needs to learn English. We are hoping that next year, when Orlando and I take furlough, Darwin will be able to travel with us and studying English. As a missionary and student his funds a very limited. Lisa is a very good friend of mine, who has brought many teams to Costa Rica, has served with CFCI, and has lived with Orlando and I. During all of these adventures she met a Tico (Costa Rican) and just has her civil wedding here on July 22nd. She is getting married by the church on August 11th. Orlando and I were their witnesses for the civil ceremony. We are so thrilled for them!

Another incredible way in which the Lord has blessed me this summer has been through my friend Trisha Stevens. We were friends in high school and are now rekindling a wonderful friendship. She decided to come for 2 months to study Spanish in an intensive course. In the meantime she is reminding me how to laugh hysterically at everything as we used to in high school and just enjoy life in general. I love her discerning spirit and they way she has truly jumped into the Costa Rican culture. Praise the Lord for friends!

While Trisha was here, another of our high school girlfriends, Laura Lamirand, visited us! So, with all three of us together, it was a bit crazy!

I have always gotten along really well with them but over the last year with having them live just two doors down, the relationships have really grown. Many of you have been asking the big question, "So, when are you going to have children?" Well, I am excited to announce that Ramsey has a new brother...Whisky (Scottish Terrier)! Okay, so maybe that isn't the news that you were hoping for, but we are thrilled! And, believe it or not, Ramsey and Whisky are getting along well. We rescued Whisky off the side of a highway, completely uncared for. He is doing well and keeps our lives interesting!

Hello Friends! It has been way too long since we have updated our blog. I guess the old saying holds true, "time flies when you are having fun." I can truly say that we are having fun and I give full credit to my Lord for all that he is doing in our lives. This photo was taken a couple of months ago with our junior high youth group. Orlando and I have had the privilege of serving in our local church Tabernacle Christian Fellowship (Comunidad Cristiana del Tabernáculo). The church is still small, as it has only been in existance for about 2 1/2 years. However, the community is growing. We have been having a blast with these junior highers. I am re-learning not only what it is like to be a teenager but also one in a different cultural context. We just completed a unit that revolved around the first letter of AGUA - "Alistarnos para Vivir en Pureza" which means "Readying ourselves to live in purity". We focused a lot of sexual purity and not being anxious to get into relationships but valueing friendships. We have just begun another unit which is taken from the G in AGUA "Guerreros para el Reino de Dios" which means "Warriors for God's Kingdom". This series focuses on outreach and local missions. We are currently preparing a drama to presented to these adolescents' friends on a special day. Please pray for us in that we would have wisdom, patience, and creativity in leading this energy filled group!

Last week I hosted a wonderful team from Vancouver, Canada. It was quite a diverse team with 5 Chinese-Canadians and 1 white Canadian, led by an American serving Costa Ricans. We all had to have a lot of grace and we were stretched. God used this group in amazing ways to work alongside of the CFCI ministries. We stayed at the Renacer rehab center working with the girls and eating lots! I had my first experience eating Nanaimo bars, a wonderful Canadian treat that I hope to have again soon! We also served in La Carpio and Transformation ministries doing dental work for the marginal communities where these ministries serve. It was an incredible week of growth and God was glorified!

As I go through life, I have learned that some friends are people that you meet who share a special time in your life. However, there are some friendships that pass beyond time and circumstances and they are precious beyond words. My friendship with four amazing women who I have laughed and cried with would be those kinds of friends. Although we are no longer crying over heartaches and homework as we did at Taylor because God has blessed each of us with godly, loving husbands, we do cry about the fact that our time together is too short.
