Bolivia Trip August 2005
"A country of diversity" is the best way that I can think to describe Bolivia. Orlando and I have traveled throughout most of Central America, but our experience in Bolivia was far different from anything we've ever experienced here. There were moments of excitement and newness and other moments of difficulty and sadness. Bolivia is made up of many different indigenous groups that have caused many divisions and instability throughout its history. There is a cultural richness to be appreciated but also a great need to be met. More than anything else, the people of Bolivia need to know their Savior.
Our work in Bolivia was two-fold. We traveled with a Project Antioch group including three others from our Costa Rica base: Carlos & Rosario Cordero, our base directors, and Esther López, a missionary working in Costa Rica from Argentina. Orlando, Carlos, Rosario, and Esther's primary focus was working with a local church in Cochabamba called Getsemaní. We (I participated in this part) taught the church how to use an evangelistic cube and spent two days doing door to door evangelism. So many people made a decision to receive Christ in their hearts (85), that we spent the third day beginning individual discipleship with those who had made the commitment. The church now has a HUGE goal to do the follow-up with these 85 individuals. All live within 5 blocks of the church. The Sunday service after doing evangelism the pastor named 40 people who will be involved in discipling these individuals. It was such a joy to see the church get excited about reaching the lost in their community. Over 50% of the church are youth!
The group also did workshops in the evenings on various topics including: evangelism, discipleship, youth ministry, and inner healing for women. We had a couple of spots on a local Christian radio station to promote CFCI. Through the week we attended chapel at a seminary, motivating the students to continue moving forward. We also spent a couple of hours in the central park of Cochabamba doing personal evangelism. 30 people committed their lives to Christ and are being distributed to local churches near where they live in order to have follow-up.
My primary purpose in traveling to Bolivia was to support our new Christ For the City International Base in getting them ready to receive short-term teams from the USA and Canada. I visited hotels for debrief and worked on a budget for teams with Aldo and Jeaniny Cayuba, the Bolivia base directors. I am so excited about the potencial for teams in Bolivia. Orlando and I stayed with the Cayuba family (Aldo, Jeaniny, Irene (9), & Kayla (7)). It was a wonderful time staying up until 1:00am almost every night praying, talking, laughing, and planning as we thought about the possibilities of what God has in store for each one of us and the ministries in which we work. Please pray for Aldo and Jeaniny and their family. Jeaniny is pregnant with twins and is about 6 months along. Being new missionaries with Christ for the City, their struggles have been many. They have lots of ministry experience and a great vision for CFCI in Bolivia. One of the things that Orlando and I have been thinking and praying about is what the Lord has in store for us upon Orlando's finishing seminary. Visiting Bolivia has opened our hearts to a new field of need. We are praying as to whether that might be where He would want us. Orlando still has another year or so of seminary so this isn't an immediate decision. However, we want to be sensitive to the Lord's leading and preparation of our hearts. Please join us in praying in the following ways:

- Pray for fruitfulness where we are and the development of our ministry here in Costa Rica.
- Pray for a new Short Term Ministries (STM) director so that Kellie can dedicate herself to her new position as Director of Personnel.
- Pray for Orlando as he continues with his studies at ESEPA.
- Pray for the preparation of a team that we hope to take to Sucre, Bolivia from Costa Rica in April of 2006.
Our eyes were opened to many new things through our trip to Bolivia. The need there is tremendous. Please pray that God will provide workers for the harvest.

"Un país de diversidad" es la mejor manera en que puedo describir Bolivia. Orlando y yo hemos viajado por medio de la mayoría de América Central, pero nuestra experiencia en Bolivia fue muy diferente de las demás experiencias. Había momentos de emoción y novedad y otros momentos de dificultad y tristeza. Bolivia consiste de muchos diferentes grupos indígenas que han causado muchas divisiones e inestabilidad en su historia. Hay una riqueza cultural que debe ser apreciado pero también una gran necesidad para alcanzar. Más que cualquier otra cosa, la gente de Bolivia necesita conocer a su Salvador.
Nuestro trabajo en Bolivia fue de doble propósito. Viajamos con un grupo de Antioquía incluyendo tres personas de nuestra base de Costa Rica: Carlos & Rosario Cordero, nuestros directores de base, y Esther López, una misionera de Argentina trabajando en Costa Rica. El enfoque principal de Orlando, Carlos, Rosario y Esther fue a trabajar con una iglesia local en Cochabamba que se llama Getsemaní. Nosotros le enseñamos a la iglesia como usar el cubo evangelístico y pasamos dos días yendo puerta a puerta haciendo evangelismo. Tantas personas recibieron a Cristo en sus corazones (85), que el tercer día comenzamos un discipulado personal con los que habían hecho el compromiso. La iglesia ahora tiene una GRAN meta para hacer el siguimiento con estos 85 individuos. Todos viven dentro de 5 cuadros de la iglesia. Durante el culto del domingo, después de haber hecho el evangelismo, el pastor nombró 40 personas quienes van a estar involucradas en discipular los nuevos convertidos. Fue un gozo de ver a la iglesia emocionarse de alcanzar los perdidos de su comunidad. Más de 50% de la iglesia son jóvenes!
El grupo también trabajó en hacer talleres sobre varios temas incluyendo: evangelismo, discipulado, ministerio a jovenes, y sanidad interior para mujeres. Tuvimos dos oportunidades de hablar en el radio cristiano local promoviendo el ministerio de CPCI. Durante la semana asistimos a la capilla del seminario UCI para motivar a los estudiantes a seguir adelante. También pasamos dos horas en el parque central de Cochabamba haciendo evangelismo personal. 30 personas comprometieron sus vidas a Cristo y van a estar ubicados en iglesias locales donde viven ellos para recibir siguimiento.
Mi propósito en viajar a Bolivia era apoyar nuestra nueva base de Cristo Para la Ciudad Internacional y prepararles para recibir equipos de corto plazo de los Estados Unidos y Canadá. Visité varios hoteles para el tiempo de evaluación y trabajé en un presupuesto para los equipos con Aldo y Jeaniny Cayuba, los directores de la base de Bolivia. Estoy muy emocionada de la potencial de equipos para Bolivia. Orlando y yo nos quedamos con la familia Cayuba (Aldo, Jeaniny, Irene (9), & Kayla (7)). Fue un tiempo maravilloso de quedarnos hablando hasta la una de la mañana casi todas las noches orando, hablando, riendo, y planeando, mientras que reflexionamos sobre las posibilidades que Dios tiene preparado para cada uno de nosotros y los ministerios en que trabajamos. Por favor ore por Aldo y Jeaniny y su familia. Jeaniny está embarazada de gemelos y ya tiene 6 meses de embarazo. Por ser nuevos misioneros con CPCI , sus luchas han sido muchas. Ellos tienen mucha experiencia y una visión amplia para CPCI en Bolivia. Una de las cosas que Orlando y yo hemos estado pensando y orando en que planes tiene el Señor cuando Orlando termina sus estudios. Nuestra visita a Bolivia nos abrió el corazón a un campo nuevo de necesidad. Estamos orando de la posibilidad de que Dios nos quiere allá. Todavía le queda a Orlando un año y algo de estudio y por eso no es una decisión inmediata. Sin embargo, queremos estar sensibles al Señor y la preparación de nuestros corazones. Por favor ayudanos en oración en las siquientes maneras:
- Ore por dirección en donde está dirigiendo Dios.
- Ore por nuestra efectividad donde estamos y el desarrollo de nuestro ministerio acá en Costa Rica.
- Ore por un nuevo director de Ministerio de Corto Plazo para que Kellie pueda dedicarse a su nueva posición como directora de Recursos Humanos.
- Ore por Orlando y sus estudios en ESEPA.
- Ore por la preparación de un equipo de Costa Rica que esperamos llevar a Sucre, Bolivia en abril de 2006.
Nuestros ojos han sido abiertos a muchas cosas nuevas por medio de nuestro viaje a Bolivia. La necesidad allá es tremenda. Por favor ore que Dios provee trabajadores para las míes.
